About Us

Now that you’ve found Harmony Mountain Singers you may be wondering “just where IS Harmony Mountain?”

Well, it’s not a place, but it is a community.

We’re a group of singers under the direction of Kathryn Nicholson, who love to sing harmony, strive to become better singers both individually and with each other, and care deeply about our choir community.

While we are an auditioned choir committed to sounding our best, we also value our singing environment. Camaraderie is core to our foundation. We love to laugh and we often get together outside of rehearsals for everything from pub nights, to forest hikes, to musical outings. We hope everyone who hears us or sings with us feels the sense of joy we do in singing harmony together.

Our History

The roots of HMS go back to 2002, when our founding members first met at a harmony singing course taught by Dale Rasmussen. Those early members (several of whom are still in our choir today) had so much fun singing together, they decided to form a community choir with Dale as director.

The choir eventually found a permanent home at St. Clement’s Church in Lynn Valley, and Dale came up with the name Harmony Mountain Singers to reflect our North Shore base. Dale led the choir for the first five years, followed by Karla Mundy, who served as our musical director for 15 years from 2007 to 2022. In addition to her role as director, Karla organized workshops and trips that gave us the opportunity to sing with other choirs both in BC and around the world.  Many HMS members have fond memories of singing trips to Cuba, Ireland and North Carolina.

HMS has grown and changed over our 20 years together, but our fundamental values have not: harmony, friendship and fun. Many have found lasting friendships within HMS. Now we are delighted to be starting a new chapter with artistic director Kathryn Nicholson and accompanist Diane Lines and we’re looking forward to creating more music and memories together.
